SEO & SEM: Concepts, Benefits and Differences

Definition

SEO & SEM are essential marketing concepts you should add to your knowledge to identify how to properly apply it to your business marketing strategies. First, we need to understand the meaning.

SEO refers to Search Engine Optimization which refers to the process and actions taken to improve the ranking of organic results in Internet search engines such as Google or Bing. By organic we refer to unpaid advertisement efforts.

SEM refers to Search Engine Marketing is a form of Internet marketing that involves the promotion of websites by increasing their visibility in search engine results pages. Primarily through paid advertising.

How can these strategies help our business marketing?

SEO & SEM belongs to inbound marketing strategies which means that the most important aspect is how we look and how we project our image to our audience. Our look is not only defined by our graphic designs, colors, pictures but also by our personality, our message, our values, our objectives and offer. So, first, we need to work on how do we want to be seen by our target market.

How to work on SEO strategies?

So, remember, our main goal is to be seen at the top of the results of search engines and you might be thinking is almost impossible to hit first places if it’s not by paid strategies. Well, that’s not totally right. Here are some components that help boost our websites in search results:

  • 1.       Writing content for your business and you can integrate a blog section in your website.2.       Including selective keyword naturally into title tags, meta descriptions, heading tags, etc.3.       Clean and formatting page URLS.4.       Optimized page load speed.

    5.       Social sharing integration within your content.

    6.       And others.

How to work on SEM strategies?

SEM includes the use of paid search, such as pay per click (PPC) listings and advertisements. Most of the time, SEM strictly includes PPC campaigns and activities, but if you use SEO and paid search, that falls under SEM efforts. Our recommendation is to work this with a group of experts as there’s monetary investments to maximize.

We will develop this topic of SEM later on another blog to get deeper on this as there’s a lot to explain about it.

Which one fits better for you?

Both, they should be work hand on hand. Even SEO takes longer to show significant results in the end it will be less costly and you will establish a search credibility that you might not establish with PPC.
